Project Management
7th hour: 2:39-3:30
Project Management Class is designed to help you design and complete a project on a topic of your choice. The project will require you to put into action skills such as communication skills, organizational skills, leadership skills, negotiation skills, problem-solving skills, and technical skills.
Throughout the year you will be working on either four small 9-weeks projects, two larger semester projects or one year long project.
Traditionally, project management includes a number of elements:
Initiation
The initiating processes determine the nature and scope of the project. If this stage is not performed well, it is unlikely that the project will be successful in meeting the project needs.
The initiating stage should include a plan that encompasses the following areas:
Planning and design. After the initiation stage, the project is planned to an appropriate level of detail. The main purpose is to plan time, cost and resources adequately to estimate the work needed and to effectively manage risk during project execution. As with the Initiation process group, a failure to adequately plan greatly reduces the project's chances of successfully accomplishing its goals.
Production and Executing
Carrying out the project and executing your plan.
Execution process group include:
Monitoring and controlling includes:
Project maintenance is an ongoing process, and it includes:
Closing
This phase consists of:
Your Topic
As you are probably aware, topic choice is crucial to this experience. Your topic should be broad, for example: history, cars, cooking, sports, photography, etc. A broad topic or subject area will give you some flexibility to design the components of the project. The components (namely, the product and the research question) should be narrow.
Here are some helpful hints
@ Through journaling and dialogue, brainstorm possible products, possible research questions, and community service options
@ Your topic should be one that you are unlikely to tire of after a month or two
@ Remember that your project must challenge you to learn much more than you know now, so avoid topics on which you are already an expert

Components of Project
Throughout the year you will be working on either four small 9-weeks projects, two larger semester projects or one year long project.
Traditionally, project management includes a number of elements:
- Initiation
- Planning or design
- Production or execution
- Monitoring and controlling

Initiation
The initiating processes determine the nature and scope of the project. If this stage is not performed well, it is unlikely that the project will be successful in meeting the project needs.
The initiating stage should include a plan that encompasses the following areas:
- setting measurable goals
- creating a budget
- who will support this project
- schedule of this project
- setting deadlines
Planning and design. After the initiation stage, the project is planned to an appropriate level of detail. The main purpose is to plan time, cost and resources adequately to estimate the work needed and to effectively manage risk during project execution. As with the Initiation process group, a failure to adequately plan greatly reduces the project's chances of successfully accomplishing its goals.
- develop a plan
- developing the scope statement;
- selecting the planning team;
- Estimating the resources for the project
- estimate the time and cost of the activity
- developing the schedule;
- developing the budget;
- risk planning;
- gaining formal approval to begin work.
Production and Executing
Carrying out the project and executing your plan.
Execution process group include:
- Direct and manage project execution
- Quality assurance of your project
Monitoring and controlling includes:
- Measuring the ongoing project activities ('where we are');
- Monitoring the project variables (cost, effort, scope, etc.) against the project management plan and the project performance baseline (where we should be);
- Identify corrective actions to address issues and risks properly (How can we get on track again);
Project maintenance is an ongoing process, and it includes:
- Continuing support of end-users
- Correction of errors
Closing
This phase consists of:
- Contract closure: Complete any items with the project
- Project close: Finalize your Project
Your Topic
As you are probably aware, topic choice is crucial to this experience. Your topic should be broad, for example: history, cars, cooking, sports, photography, etc. A broad topic or subject area will give you some flexibility to design the components of the project. The components (namely, the product and the research question) should be narrow.
